Possum Control

It's a programme designed to reduce and control possum number in Taranaki. A distinctive feature of the programme and one of the reasons for its success is that it is a "self-help" programme based on a joint effort between the Council and land occupiers. The Council focuses on being a facilitator for land occupiers undertaking initial possum control over a wide area and then working with land occupiers to achieve ongoing effective, co-ordinated and integrated possum control on their property.

A New Configuration for Wastewater Treatment

For most people, there is little exciting or remarkable about planning for sewage (wastewater) treatment and disposal. However, this story has a remarkable ending.

After initially applying in 1998 to continue discharging its wastewater after milliscreening, to ocean via a long ocean outfall Hastings District Council (HDC) was granted consent in 2001 to construct a wastewater treatment plan to be commissioned by December 2007. The Hastings District Council - Tangata Whenua Joint Wastewater Committee was not enthusiastic about the treatment process defined and requested staff investigate alternatives that would better meet the aspirations of the community and tangata whenua.

Hence a new project was born "To find an alternative configuration for wastewater treatment that would better meet the aspirations of the community as a whole"
