Career Start

Giving Young people in the Rangitikei a career start close to home

Rangitikei's demographics show a hollowing out of 18-24 year olds because of educational and employment opportunities outside the District. This trend has a wide range of impacts on community life - such as reducing the injection of fresh ideas into the many service, leisure and creative organisations throughout the recent LTCCP process, a submission from a youth forum convened by the Council noted "we need more opportunities - more, better jobs... we need communities where people feel welcomed and safe..." Young people see improved employment opportunities as the key to Rangitikei's future.

Possum Control

It's a programme designed to reduce and control possum number in Taranaki. a distinctive feature of the programme and one of the reasons for its success is that it is a "self-help" programme based on a joint effort between the Council and land occupiers. The Council focuses on being a facilitator for land occupiers undertaking initial possum control over a wide area and then working with land occupiers to achieve ongoing effective, co-ordinated and integrated possum control on their property.

Recreating Paradise

Hamilton City Council first presented the Paradise Gardens concept to the community through developing a management plan which was approved by Council in 1984. In 1986 Mr Wu Donghua, then Mayor of Hamilton's Chinese sister city Wuxi, planted a magnolia in an empty paddock at Hamilton Gardens as a symbol of the bond between the two cities. It was that act that launched Council's development of the Paradise Gardens, seeking to create a concept to which the broadest cross-section of its community can connect.

Smoke Free Parks and Playgrounds

South Taranaki District Council was the first local government authority in New Zealand to take a real leadership role with the smoke free healthy living message when it implemented its Smoke Free Environments Policy. The aim of the policy is to promote a smoke free lifestyle as being both desirable and the norm by encouraging people not to smoke in Council parks, playgrounds and reserves, as well as in it swimming pool surrounds. As part of the policy, smoking is banned in all indoor Council facilities.
