"Tuning Up the Engine"

When the President and Chief Executive of SOLGM met with the Minister of Local Government in January 2009, the Minister indicated that he was interested in streamlining the local government legislation.  SOLGM undertook to get back to the Minister with our thoughts on possible changes to the legislation to achieve this.

The resulting report "Tuning up the Engine" was delivered to the Minister in March 2009.  The report draws heavily on the content of the 2007 "Strengthening Local Democracy" report and "Managing for Sustainable Communities" the SOLGM briefing paper to the Incoming Minister.

"Strengthening Local Democracy"

The paper "Strengthening Local Democracy" was prepared as a background paper for the Local Government Commission and its review of the Local Government Act 2002 and the Local Electoral Act 2001, in March 2007.  You can download the paper hereThe paper has now been forwarded to the Local Government Commission.

The content of the paper builds on the Questionnaire on the 2006 LTCCP round that was undertaken in August 2006, and the discussion at the subsequent "LTCCP Countdown" Seminars that took place in November 2006.  For a copy of the Summary of the results of the Questionnaire click here, for additional information about the "LTCCP Countdown" Seminars click here.  A draft of the paper was then published as an exposure draft and further input sought from the sector before the paper was finalised.
