The scope of this module includes 19 processes for the management of workplace health and safety. These are divided in to core processes and cross-cutting processes.
Core processes
These are the four processes that make up the General approach to managing workplace health and safety risks also known as the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. This is discussed in Part 2 under Managing Risks and Hazards (Overview). In addition, there are health and safety processes to address some mandatory general duties.
- Identifying hazards and assessing risks
- Eliminating or minimising risks
- Monitoring controls
- Reviewing for continuous improvement

Mandatory processes
In addition to those four processes, there are 10 health and safety processes to address some mandatory general duties.
- Conducting exposure monitoring
- Conducting health monitoring
- Managing and reporting injuries, illnesses and incidents
- Providing information, training, supervision and instruction.
- Implementing emergency procedures
- Providing first aid and general workplace facilities
- Providing personal protective equipment
- Enabling rehabilitation
- Managing contractors for health and safety
- Managing procurement of goods for health and safety

Cross-cutting processes
These are 5 processes that form an integrated part of all the core processes and mandatory duties. These are included because they invoke legal requirements and must be addressed for successful workplace safety and health risk management.
- Assigning roles and duties
- Engaging with workers
- Consulting, co-operating and co-ordinating activities with other duty holders
- Fostering a workplace safety culture
- Keeping written records
